چکیده
Although large numbers of temperate phages are known to exist in nature, only a small number of these have been examined in much detail. Foremost among these is the coliphage ~, which has been studied in great depth over the past two decades. However, it is already quite clear that phage ~ represents only one alternative among many with respect to any of its interesting properties. Most other temperate phages which have been studied differ in essential aspects [see Calendar (1970) for review]. The temperate Salmonella phage P22 differs in many ways from phage ),. The DNA of X has cohesive ends (Hershey and Burgi, 1965), whereas phage P22 has linear DNA with circularly permuted sequence and terminal repetitions (Rhoades et al., 1968). X grows in the absence of recombination (Signer and Weil, 1968), but P22 requires recombination for growth (Botstein and Matz, 1970). X carries out specialized transduetion only, whereas P22 carries out both generalized and specialized transduction (Wing, 1968). X prophage is repressed completely by a single represser (Ptaslme and Hopkins, 1968; Hopkins and Ptashne, 1971) which completely specifies immunity. P22, on the other hand, uses two gene products to repress the prophage (Gough, 1968) and two separate genetic elements contribute to the specificity of immunity (Bezdek and

Fine structure genetic and physical map of the phage P22 tail protein gene.
Bacteriophage P22 which are incapable of making functional tail protein can be propagated by the addition of purified mature tail protein trimers to either liquid or solidified medium. This unique in vitro complementation condition has allowed us to isolate 74 absolute lethal tail protein mutants of P22 after hydroxylamine mutagenesis. These phage mutants have an absolute requirement for purifi...
متن کاملRegional Assignment of the Rat Alpha-Feto Protein Gene (Afp) to Chromosome 14p21-p22
The gene encoding alpha fetoprotein (locus symbol Afp) was assigned to rat chromosome 14 at band p21-p22 using fluorescence in situ hybridization method. The present result suggests that there is a conserved syntenic group between human 4q11-q13, mouse 5F-G, and rat 14p21-p22.
متن کاملRegional specificity of illegitimate recombination by the translocatable ampicillin-resistance element Tn1 in the genome of phage P22.
Insertions of the translocatable ampicillin-resistance element Tn1 were selected in the genome of the temperate Salmonella phage P22 by growing the phage on hosts carrying the resistance plasmid RP4. Insertions of Tn1 into phage P22 are rare (10(-10) per phage) and nonrandomly distributed in the P22 genome. They are found mainly in the vicinity of the P22 ant gene. Insertions within the ant gen...
متن کاملThe isolation and sequence of missense and nonsense mutations in the cloned bacteriophage P22 tailspike protein gene.
Twenty-seven new mutations in the structural gene for the Salmonella typhimurium bacteriophage P22 tailspike protein have been isolated, mapped using a powerful plasmid-based genetic system and their DNA sequence changes determined. The mutations were generated by hydroxylamine treatment of the cloned gene on a plasmid expression vector. Assaying the activity of the tailspike protein produced f...
متن کاملCandidate Gene Polymorphism for IL-Rγ and ChB6 Genes in the Indigenous Chicken of North Western Himalayan State of Himachal Pradesh, India
Present investigation was carried out to identify DNA polymorphism of IL-2Rγ and ChB6 genes. Sixty five birds belonging to the indigenous chicken of Himachal Pradesh were utilized. Good quality DNA samples were subjected to PCR-RFLP analysis using chicken specific primers. Overnight restriction enzyme digestion was carried out at 37°C with IU Hph I and Pvu II for IL-2Rγ and ChB6 genes, respecti...
